Big Box Retail

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

In what will be a multi-tower, mixed use development in the new center of Shenyang, the first portion to be completed is the Forum 66 retail mall. The long, curved retail corridors will provide a  pedestrian connection and transit hub support for the major towers that are just now coming out of the ground. At each end of the mall, large, light-filled atria form a dramatic entrance, drawing in the passing street traffic.

Our main photographic challenge was to find camera angles which didn’t make the mall appear to be in the middle of a major construction site.

The dynamic interiors house the usual variety of retail brands which, with the apparent wealth from the regions development of natural resources, all seem to be doing well.

I’d like to say that I stayed here but clearly, I didn’t make the smart choice.

Auto Exotic – A Fixation

Over at UC San Francisco Misson Bay Campus, WRNS have completed another parking structure. This project is dedicated to the upcoming UCSF Mission Bay Medical Center due to open in early 2015. Eventually, as directed by the master plan, the structure will be surrounded by taller buildings but until then, it will be highly visible from the freeway and from residences on nearby Potrero Hill. As a result, the design needed to be engaging for both current and future conditions.

The angled groups of louvres were all the same color but the anodized surface produced varying levels of reflection with the moving sun angles causing the appearance of the facades  to change constantly throughout the day.

Internally, light coming through the facade, both directly and reflected, fills the spaces with a variety of lighting conditions. Nearer the elevator cores, the perforated screens provide an ever changing visual feast as the sun tracks around the building.
